Why solar panels on your boat?

Solar panels on your boat are becoming increasingly popular — and for good reason. With a solar panel system on your boat, you are no longer dependent on shore power. Depending on the chosen system, you can sail completely independently or at least significantly extend the time between shore power charging sessions.

Additionally, a solar energy system is a one-time investment that generates free electricity for years. You won't need to purchase expensive electricity from the marina as often, or at all—which significantly reduces costs. And not unimportantly: generating your own green energy reduces CO2 emissions and lessens your reliance on fossil fuels.

Is my battery suitable for solar panels?

Almost all battery types used on boats are suitable for solar energy. The most common types are semi-traction, AGM, GEL, and lithium (LiFePO4). All our sets are equipped with high-quality PWM or MPPT charge controllers that are suitable for all these battery types.

It may be necessary to make a specific setting to further optimize charging — especially with lithium batteries. Are you unsure whether your battery is correctly set up? Please contact us; we have a lot of experience with all types of batteries and will be happy to assist you.

An MPPT charge controller extracts 10-30% more energy from the panel than a PWM controller and is recommended for larger systems or two panels. For smaller systems, a PWM controller is a reliable and affordable choice.

Glass or flexible solar panels on your boat?

On a boat, flexible solar panels play a larger role than on a campervan. Many boats have a curved surface or a walkable deck — and that's precisely where flexible panels excel. They are lightweight, flexible, and, under the right conditions, walkable.

However, flexible panels also have disadvantages: they are more expensive, heat up faster which reduces their power output, and have a shorter lifespan than glass panels. Our recommendation: do you have a flat surface available without weight restrictions? Then choose glass panels – cheaper and longer lasting. Do you have a curved surface or do you want to be able to walk on the panels? Then flexible panels are the right choice.

How many peak watts do you need on your boat?

For most boat users, between 120 and 2x185 peak watts is sufficient. Most captains sail on weekends and only go out in good weather — from spring until autumn.

The biggest power consumers on the boat are the compressor fridge and the inverter. Smaller consumers are lighting, TV, and water pump. Do you only have small consumers? Then a set around 120 peak watts will be sufficient. Do you have a compressor fridge and/or an inverter? Then you'll quickly be looking at 2x185 peak watts. Do you have a heavy inverter of 1200 watts or more? Then a custom system is the best solution — please contact us.

Use table 1 to calculate your daily consumption. Enter the wattage and hours of use for all your appliances and sum the "Consumption" column. Then compare your total with table 2 — which shows the average daily yield per month for a 120W and 185W panel. Choose the months when you are on the water most frequently and check which panel provides sufficient yield.

Veelgestelde vragen
